We are pleased to announce that London Black, in all packaging formats, is gluten free. This joins Ansbacher Lager as part of our permanent gluten free offering, and makes our much loved flagship beer accessible to even more drinkers!
We began the transition to gluten free back in November 2025, and have spent the subsequent months verifying our process and ensuring that the character of London Black as we know and love remains unchanged. In fact, we believe it is tasting better than ever!
All GF beers produced at Anspach & Hobday are initially brewed in the usual way using grains such as malted barley, which do contain gluten. Upon wort collection prior to fermentation, an enzyme is added which breaks down the gluten proteins present in the wort/beer into harmless peptides. This process reduces the gluten content of the beer to below the legal threshold of 20ppm thus meeting the legal standard for both the UK and EU.
This process is verified by testing at a certified, external lab, typically Murphy & Sons. Murphy’s employs R5 Gliadin analysis, which is UKAS Accredited for the testing of beer.
Every batch of London Black from 218 (packaged on 10/11/2025) has been produced as outlined above and is therefore gluten free. We are currently in the process of updating our packaging to reflect this change.

Notes of roasted coffee and chocolate are balanced by a touch of red fruit from the hops, and brought together with the smooth, creamy mouthfeel achieved by the use of nitrogen.
